Since opening its doors in 1966, Wallace State has served hundreds of thousands of students, and more than 20,000 have graduated. From the 29 students in Wallace State’s very first graduating class in 1967 to the most recent graduating class of more than 1,000, Wallace State has improved the quality of lives of hundreds of thousands of individuals. Today, Wallace State is the fourth largest college in the Alabama College System, serving nearly 7,000 students. A virtual powerhouse in educational programming, the college offers 66 degree programs and certificate majors and hundreds of transfer opportunities.
Wallace State is a state-assisted institution, but the percentage of its annual budget aprovided by the taxes of Alabama's citizens decreases every year. At the turn of the millennium, that portion stands just at just over one-third of each year's operating revenue. Simply put, in order to carry out its chartered mission of teaching and learning, the leader among community colleges in the state must tap into additional resources. While we strive to increase those sources of funding, private giving grows in importance as a new source of funding to provide scholarships, improve educational programs, and capital improvements.
